Opportunities to develop athletes towards the complete Modern Pentathlete are available from the ages of 7 to 80 in South Africa. Although the devoloping sports of biathle, triathle and laser run are not Olympic disciplines they incorporate the basics of running, swimming and shooting. Athletes can compete from provincial to national level with the ultimate goal of being selected to represent SAMPA at the annual World Championship events.
Biathle is an event that involves the following sequence Run-Swim-Run. Athletes between the ages of 9 and 80 compete for a spot in the various SAMPA teams attending the World Biathle & Triathle Championship that is held every year. It is a world class sport but not an Olympic one. Athletes run an age appropriate distance per a route, enter transition area for a shoe change, enter the swimming pool for a route swim or open water swim, enter the transition area again for a shoe change, and finish with the same age appropriate distance run.
Triathle is an event that involves the following sequence Shoot-Swim-Run. Athletes between the ages of 9 and 80 compete for a spot in the various SAMPA teams attending the World Biathle & Triathle Championship that is held every year. It is a world class sport but not an Olympic one. A packed start leading to the laser shooting station, shooting down 5 targets after which athletes enter the transition area where shoes are removed followed by a swim, upon exiting the swim shoes are put back on and athletes continue on the running cycle to complete the sequence of events only to repeat that for different age groups.
The Laser-Run is the latest original creation of UIPM, coming from the combined event in Modern Pentathlon and launched in 2015 as the last part of full Modern Pentathlon competition. It is an event that involves the following sequence Shoot-Run. Athletes between the ages of 9 and 80 compete for a spot in the various SAMPA teams attending the World Laser Run Championship that is held every year. It is a world class sport but not yet an Olympic one. This event can be staged on beaches, in cities and in the countryside. Laser-Run combines Running and Shooting in fast-paced and dynamic races of 2 – 4 rounds depending the age group of the participants. Athletes have to hit a target 5 times before they can run.
This is the last step before full Modern Pentathlon. It is composed of 4 out of the 5 disciplines of Modern Pentathlon: Swimming, Running, Shooting and Fencing. All 4 events take place on the same day. Tetrathlon presents opportunity to represent their Province at SA Championship for all age groups, SAMPA at Youth A World Championship for ages 17-18 and South Africa at the Junior Olympics. Tetrathlon starts with a swim discipline, followed by the fencing discipline. Points are scored at these two disciplines that determine the staggered starting order for the combined event (also known as Laser Run). Distances are all age appropriate.
Modern Pentathlon is UIPM’s flagship sport comprising of Swimming, Fencing, Show Jumping, Running and Shooting and offers the ultimate test of an athlete’s fitness, courage and skill. Combining five traditional disciplines in a one day competition, Modern Pentathlon has been a core sport at the Olympic Games since 1912. The UIPM organizes an annual World Championship for senior, junior and youth athletes, as well as a World Cup Series that consists of four events culminating in a World Cup Final. Every four years, the ultimate test: The Olympic Games!
